'Orange is the New Black' teaches that all the bad things in life are only temporary
I just started watching the Netflix show "Orange is the New Black" from the first episode yesterday. And, so far, I think the show has an integral message — that all the bad things in life are only temporary.
For those of you who have never watched the show, the main character, Piper (Taylor Schilling) is sentenced to 15 months in jail for a decade old crime of transporting money across country lines for her drug-dealing girlfriend.
Upon arrival, this is what another inmate, Yoga Jones, says to her:
"Work hard to make something as meaningful and beautiful as you can. And when your done, pack it in and know it was all temporary."
I think this quote should be a mantra in our lives. Sometimes it's easy to focus on the bad things in life and think things will never change. And, for some people, when bad things happen, they give up on life altogether.
Don't give up!
Let me repeat that. Do not give up on life, no matter how bad things may seem at the moment. Because, the truth is the bad times, like a break-up, losing a job, a rumor spread about you and yes, even going to jail (as long as it's not a life-sentence), do not last forever.
While these moments may make a mark on your life, it does not have to shape your future — or eliminate your future altogether. Although it may sound cliche, time really does heal all wounds. And it will get better.
